1. The unique properties (characteristics) of water
make life possible on Earth. Some properties
of water are indicated below:
-- capable of capillary action
-- high specific heat
-- high surface tension
-- inbibition
-- high heat of vaporization
-- high heat of fusion
-- decreases in density when cooled from 4 C to 0 C
a) for each property,
discuss the property and explain it in terms of the
physical/chemical
nature of water.
b) for each property you chose
in part A, describe one example of how
the property affects
the functioning of living organisms.
2. Acid precipitation is an enormous problem for the
Adirondack Mountains and its foothills.
a.) State the the chemical
cause/energy source of the pollution causing acid precipitation
for our
area.
b.) Since we are not the source area
for most of the acid precipitation influencing us, explain
specifically how (or why) this pollution gets to our area.
c.) List and explain three
adverse effects of acid on the environment of our area.
