• New Section X policy for spectators at all athletic contests

Posted by Erin E. Woods on 11/22/2022

The Section X Northern Athletic Conference has issued a new sportsmanship policy that will govern all athletic contests in Section X. This new policy will go into effect for Edwards-Knox Central School District, and all Section X school districts, beginning with the first scrimmage of the 2022 Winter Sports Season. The policy, as adopted, is detailed below.

    Section X Spectator Sportsmanship Policy:

“Any negative, inappropriate, derogatory comments or actions that brings direct attention to a supervisor or school administrator by a spectator or group of spectators are required to be addressed by the host school, Coach, District Administration, or NYSPHSAA representative in the following non- sequential order depending on the comments or behavior:

      • First warning – The spectator or group of spectators will be directed to refrain from any negative comments or actions.
      • Second warning – A personal discussion will be had with the spectators or group of spectators on the above NYSPHSAA expectations and reminding the spectators or group of spectators of the next step, removal of the game or event, will be utilized if the behavior continues.
      • Removal from the contest – The spectator or group of spectators will be directed to leave the facility for the remainder of the game or event. If spectators or a group of spectators refuse to leave the game or event, play will be stopped until they vacate the premises.

*Districts or officials have the right to bypass the steps above based on the severity of the situation.

Penalty for being removed from a game or event: Any spectator removed from a game or event will have a minimum penalty of completing the NFHS Parent Credential courses (Positive Parenting Within School Programs & The Parent Seat) and a one game suspension before they are allowed to attend any interscholastic event, home or away. The suspension will be in effect for the next interscholastic event at the same level of the same sport from which the spectator removal occurred. If the removal occurs during the last game of a sport season, the suspension will be served in the next applicable interscholastic event in a subsequent sport season. Upon completion of the NFHS Parent Credential course, the spectator will provide the certificate of completion to the athletic department office. Failure to comply will result in an additional suspension. Schools are required to communicate with the offending spectator on the NYSPHSAA Spectator Sportsmanship Expectations.

Depending on the severity of the behavior/comments or future disqualifications by the offending spectator NYSPHSAA and the Section may get directly involved in the situation. Note: A school may take any or all these actions during or after an interscholastic contest.”

We are looking forward to a winter sports season that is both competitive and fun for our student athletes, coaches, and spectators. Please contact our district’s Winter Season Athletic Director, Vanessa Ross, at vross@ekcsk12.org if you have any questions regarding this new policy.

  • After School Program

Posted by Brandi Graham on 10/12/2022

The 4-H After School Program is growing at our school and across the county! Students have been having fun with cooking, STEM challenges, environmental appreciation, art, and games as they learn what the four H’s of 4-H stand for. It’s been so fun for our staff to greet returning students and meet new ones. We all have been having a great time! The word is getting out, however, and our waitlists are growing. We want to be able to provide this fun and helpful resource to all the children that want to participate but we are limited by our regulations on how many students we can have. But there is a solution!

    More STAFF = more STUDENTS!

There are positions for assistant educators (ages 16-18; $14/hr.) and educators (age 18+ with a diploma; $17/hr.) at every location. Schedules are flexible, all training is paid, and all materials for lessons are provided. If you are interested in learning more, contact Jackie Card at jtc292@cornell.edu or call 315-379-9192 ext. 234. You can also find the application here - https://stlawrence.cce.cornell.edu/camps-and-afterschool/4-h-after-school-programs.

  • New Messaging System-ParentSquare

Posted by Brandi Graham on 9/26/2022

Dear Edwards-Knox Central School District Families,

We are excited to announce that the Edwards-Knox Central School District has adopted a new form of school-to-home communication called ParentSquare. This unified communications platform is designed to keep parents and guardians informed and encourage greater engagement and connection between home and school. It provides a safe way for school administrators, teachers, staff, and parents to:

    • Receive important alerts,

    • Send and receive school and class information,

    • Share pictures and files,

    • View Calendar items,

    • Sign up to volunteer, and

    • Schedule parent-teacher conferences

District and school, grade level, and classroom information will now be sent to your computer or phone via email and/or text. For even more convenience, you can download the ParentSquare app for iOS and Android devices using the links below or search for Parent Square in your app store.

    App for Android

    App for iOS (Apple)

The ParentSquare platform will replace our previous OneCallNow system which was used to send informational and emergency alerts (e.g. snow days, emergency closures, safety drills) to staff and parents. All emergency notifications and teacher/school posts will be sent to the email and cell phone contact information that is currently on file with Edwards-Knox Central School District in SchoolTool. It is critically important that we have your most up to date contact information. If you need to update your phone numbers or email addresses, please contact your child’s school secretary.

    • Grades PK-6, 315-562-8130, ext. 25533

    • Grades 7-12, 315-562-8131  ext. 25520

On September 30th, families will receive a test text, phone call, and email from Edwards-Knox Central School District via ParentSquare. If you do not receive this, please contact your child’s grade level school secretary and verify your contact information.

To learn more about ParentSquare, or to get help setting up your account, please visit this Getting Started resource page for families.
