    Mission Statement
     
    The mission of the Physical Education Program at Edwards-Knox Central School is to educate students to value a healthy lifestyle and to have the skills necessary to maintain that lifestyle.
     
    Philosophy
     
    The philosophy of the Physical Education Program is to encourage students' development in all aspects of Personal Fitness. The acronym HELP will be used; Health is available for Everyone for a Lifetime and it's Personal. (Philosophy for Fitnessgram) Students will understand that healthy living can be achieved for a lifetime and there are different ways for different people.
     
    Overall Goal
     
    The overall goal is to have a Physically Educated Student by Commencement. Students should know how to maintain a healthy lifestyle through their school years and beyond. By going through this process, students will have the necessary behavioral skills to maintain a healthy lifestyle, as well.
     Policies and Procedures (7-12)

    Dress Code

    Students must have the proper dress for class. This is important for two reasons. First, wearing athletic style clothes are much safer than casual clothing. Secondly, it is a matter of personal hygiene. Students may be sweating during class that may cause body odor.

    The following rules have been set for safety and health reasons:

    - T-shirts or sweatshirts will only be allowed - Mid-thigh shorts or athletic pants will be allowed (no jeans) - Sneakers that stay on the student's feet, no slip-ons (must be tied) - No Jewelry. All jewelry must be removed before starting class. This includes any facial rings or studs, necklaces, bracelets, watches. This is for safety. During game play, things may get caught on these pieces of jewelry

    The following rules have been set for the pool:

    Females - One piece bathing suits preferred but 2 pieces will be allowed

    Male - Swim Trunks are preferred

    T-shirts will be allowed however no cotton T-shirts. The shirts must be snug and used for swimming (i.e. under-amour, body glove, any other water shirt). This is for safety while in the pool.

    Safety Requirements

    The following rules are for the safety of all students. The failure to adhere to these rules will result in a loss of daily points, students being sent to ISS or other disciplinary actions through the school.

    - No gum - No hats in the pool area or gymnasium. Hats may be allowed outside at the Teachers Discretion - Proper Dress Required - No Jewelry - Be respectful to other students and teachers

    Absences

    Students absent from class need to make-up class by the end of the marking period. Absences not made up will receive a 0 for their daily grade. For every 0 in a marking period will drop the semester grade about 4 points.

    Absences that are exempt from this policy are scheduled band lessons and school related field trips or events. Students should talk to their teachers for clarifying your absences.

    Short-term Medical Excuses

    Shorts term medical excuses are defined as a note from a parent, nurse, and the clinic. All shorts term excuses must be made up or will receive a 0. Notes should not exceed 3 in one semester. After 3, a doctor's note must be present.

    Long-term Medical Excuses

    Long-term medical excuses are defined as a note from a doctor. The note must have the date they can return or they must be cleared by the doctor. There may be certain things a student can do so it may be helpful to list that on the note. Classes must be made up at the teacher's discretion.

    Make Up Policy

    All classes that are missed must be made up by the end of the semester except for the excused absences (scheduled band lessons, school trips). Students can do a number of things to make up classes. The following is a list of a few but it is not limited.

    - come down during a free period and participate in the class - stay after school - written work or projects for long term excuses only - keep score or officiate during a class - helping in other ways at the teachers discretion

    Calculation of Grade

    80% of the final grade will be an average of the daily grade 20% of the final grade will be a skills assessment. At the end of each unit, a skill assessment will be given. There will be a final exam in January and June to test cardiovascular, muscular strength, and muscular endurance.

    Daily Grade

    Students may earn up to five points for their daily grade. The following will all be considered in the grading process:

    -proper dress -proper warm-up -full active participation -sportsmanship - safety and respect

    Students who are not prepared for class will earn a "0" for the day. Students who have sneakers may earn back up to 3 points for the day if they participate fully. The teacher will determine if students can participate for safety reasons.

    Skill Assessment

    On the last day of the unit, students will be given a task. The teacher will grade the student on that task. This grade will include physical skill(s) along with behavioral skill(s) and knowledge of the activity.

    Warm-up

    Students are expected to complete a warm-up before actual game play. The warm-up will consist of the following

    - Jog or Power Walk(not a Sunday Stroll) for 4 minutes - 25 sit-ups - 10 push ups (can be modified) - Stretching on your own

    Final Exam

    After the first half and second half, a final exam will be given. This will test your cardiovascular health, muscular strength and endurance. There are many opportunities to get ready for this (warm-ups, fitness Friday and game play).

    For the second half exam, we will be doing the mile run/walk or power walking exam. For the mile run/walk, students will run/walk a mile as fast they can. For the power walk, students must walk (and only walk) around a predetermined course for 15 minutes. Whenever the facilitator says stop, they count how many laps they do in tenths. The following grading scale will be used:

    Credit

    Students must have completed the course with a passing grade (65). Physical Education is a half year course. Each quarter counts 40% of the final grade and the final exam counts 20%. So, the first and second quarter will count twice and the final will count once.

    Students must complete 2 credits of Physical Education in high school (grades 9-12) to graduate. Discipline

    Discipline will be handled by the individual teacher. Discipline can include sending a student out of class, writing a student up for a district consequence, loss of daily points, parent/guardian notification and others.

    Fitness Friday

    Every Friday will be Fitness Friday. Fitness Friday will consist of jogging or power walking (not a Sunday Stroll) for specified amount of time. This will get students ready for the final exam. It is up to the teacher to designate the time.

    There may some Fridays where we will do some other activity.

    Swimming

    Students in grades 7 and 8 are required to swim. Proper dress is defined under the dress code.

    Students in grade 8 will have the option of testing out to not be required to swim in grades 9 and 10. Students in grade 10 will have the same option to not swim in grades 11 and 12.

    The current test consists of jumping in the water (over your head), treading water for three minutes, and swimming continuously using the strokes that have been taught for 500 yards. The required strokes are front crawl (with rhythmic breathing), back crawl, side stroke, elementary back stroke, and breast stroke. Each stroke must be performed for 100 yards (Down and back twice)

    Students, also, have the opportunity to take life guarding in place of their physical education class. This is a great opportunity because life guards can make a lot of money. These guards will be used for family swim night and lap swim night. There is a pre-requisite for life guarding. Please see the physical education teacher for more details.

    Students will have at least 10 minutes to change. That should be enough time for students to change and take a shower if they would like to get the chlorine off.

    Lockers/Locker Room

    Edwards-Knox School is not responsible for any missing or stolen items. Student may obtain a lock from their physical education teacher and lock their valuables in a locker.

    Students need to take care of the locker room. The following are used to ensure the safety of the students and to keep the locker room in good shape.

    1. No Horseplay 2. Make sure trash goes in the trash cans. 3. Use respect while in the locker room 4. Damage to any part of the locker room is the students' responsibility. 5. Walking is allowed in the locker rooms 6. If a student uses a shower or the sink, make sure it gets shut off.

    Please help keep the locker room safe and in good condition.
